I think signing Stajan is the lesser of 3 evils.
1. Keep Stajan as our veteran centre. He's a good lockeroom guy and can step into a top 6 role when needed. He is good defensively. The coach uses him appropriately and he doesn't look out of place. Hopefully he doesn't get more then the 3.5 mil he already makes, but at this stage we're going to need to get above the floor. I care more about the term then I do his cap hit.
2. Trade Stajan, then overpay for a UFA in the offseason to replace him. Have no idea how the new guy will fit it, and term/cap hit will cause CP to lose it. The term/cap hit for a free agent centreman is going to be high.
3. Trade Stajan and toss Backlund, Colborne, Knight, Monahan etc to the wolves and watch them get destroyed every night. Backlund has taken steps forward this season, but I don't think he's ready for a full-time role on the top unit. We have no one who is ready to lead the top line and be productive each and every night. Right now, we have a rotation of whomever is playing best and that's fine until someone steps up.
This signing if true isn't as bad as it's being made out to be. We NEED vets on the team, and more importantly a veteran centreman. Othewise Backlund becomes our #1 guy and he's just not ready for that role yet. Stajan is a hard worker and leads by example. We need players like that on this team right now. This signing I think is much more about retaining a guy who sets a good example, then it is having him around to win us games.
