Now I have no idea what the injury is but to me it sounds like acl tear. Surgery for this has advanced so much in the past 10-15 years that chances are with rehab and strength his surgical knee will be stronger than his other knee.
It sucks this has happened and it's a setback for him but this is no different than Bouma last year blowing his knee and being out for the season. Unless there is something more to it we don't know, all else being equal he'll recover and be fine like Bouma but will suffer the set back of a year of development.
