Back on topic...
The reason Edmonton passed Calgary in 2005 was due to two events: the inaugural Grand Prix of Edmonton and the World Masters Games. While neither are glamourous like the Olympics, both attract huge numbers of spectators/participants.
Things will be back to normal when you see the stats for 2006.
