Obviously there have been some decent commercials since then...but there are way too many commercials of guys in locker rooms, or skating in the dark by themselves, playing with star-strucks kids, looking really introspective etc.

Yeah, it was pretty nice the first couple of times that style worked. Problem is, one group nailed it and then every group for the last ten years has decided "nail it" the same way.
