I have MMA fighter friends that have gone through staph infections, but I don't think it ever got serious enough to spread to the heart for any of them. Even when it wasn't as serious as Sieloff's it was downright miserable for them, and they're tough fellows. He'll be a mentally tougher man come full recovery time.
It sucks too because this is the type of infection/injury that can be prevented through proper sanitation procedures and equipment care. I learned through other people, thankfully never having suffered through one myself. Even if it looks like a dingy, beat up gym, ask what they use to clean the mats with. If they're serious about the health of their staff and trainees they'll know right off the bat or they'll point to someone who does.
