Making up ground is extremely hard and the two teams chasing ( Minnesota and Dallas) are already at the point where they need a lot of things to go right for them to catch up.

No, they are not. Half the season is left. Canucks lose 2-3 in regulation, Minnesota and/or Dallas win 2-3 in regulation and they are pretty much tied.
If there were 10 games left I would agree with you.
