The 2 players aren't even comparable. Stempniak is in a big dry spell but is known as a streaky player who can absolutely turn it on. He can play a regular shift in the top 9 and not hurt you defensively.
Carcillo is a 4th line goon who can barely play against other 4th line goons.
You should feel shame.

So what do you feel Stempniak will bring back?
I think his value is closer to a conditional 7th rounder. A lot of posters have "Stempy" bringing back a 2nd. They should all feel shame.
Over the same dry spell the CP consensus worst player in recent years (Butler) has out-scored Stempniak 5 pts to 4 and is only -13.
How does -17 in 24 games show you are not hurting defensively? When does getting outplayed night after night for over a quarter of the season show that you are not doing a decent job defensively?
There are no other teams that Stempniak gets to play top 9 (without a string of injuries).
Saying Stempniak is a top-9 forwards at the NHL level is very much like saying that Butler is a top-3 d-man based on his 20 minutes a game this year and should be worth a 2nd round pick plus a prospect.
I believe Hartley is giving Stempniak so much ice time so at year end when he is doing his exit interview he can tell Burke that the line up that Burke gave him was soooooooo bad that he was forced to play a plug like Stempniak 19 minutes a game.
