I'm no Harper supporter (and I don't take much stock in a single poll taken with no election in sight, which asks for "approval" rather than about "intention to re-elect).

But to say, as Sheehan does, that

Quote:
Now Canadians need to wake up to the fact that their new minority, disliked government is leading them down this same slippery slope to the fascistic militarism of their immediate neighbors to the south.
is a pretty big overstatement, to me. Harper is nowhere near as bad as Bush yet--and Canadian politics is usually characterized by a somewhat less ideological approach to these kinds of issues anyway. Harper is pretty far from a "fascist militarist" right now. Which is a way of saying--following HOZ's favourite joke--that Harper doesn't eat babies. (he just drowns puppies )

But I don't think Sheehan quite grasps the different situations here. Canadians shouldn't be alarmed by increases in military spending because our military is already underfunded and committed to peacekeeping and humanitarian aid missions abroad. Simply put--they need the money, and it's not to bring about a fascist state--it's to give Canada more options i dealing with global crises. I would suspect that most Canadians support slightly increased military spending.

If we already spent more than the rest of the world combined, that would obviously be different.
