Umm... are you sure you're talking about the right guy? Cogliano spent two years developing in college after he was drafted. Considering Cogliano put up 18 goals and 45 points while being a +1 on a terrible team in his rookie year, it's absolutely unfair to say Edmonton ruined him by rushing him. However, Cogliano did seem to regress from his rookie year and you can argue that Edmonton's poor player development led to Cogliano not developing properly.

And I have no idea where the idea that he was KHL bound came from. Cogliano was traded for a 2nd round pick and after the trade the Ducks avoided arbitration and signed him to a 3 year $7.17M deal. You make Cogliano sound like a player who was let go and remained unsigned for the longest time until the landing with the Ducks.
