Breen was signed simply to fill an open spot in Abbotsford. People "became enamored" with him because Breen turned himself from AHL filler to marginal prospect. And it wasn't the fans that developed that opinion first, it was the coaching staff and management in Abbotsford.
I don't know that anyone here actually thought he'd become a "regular NHLer", but many did want to see what he could do at the NHL level. Those are not the same things.
