Butterfly toggles are such a pain in the butt. Installing them can be tricky and if you take the mount off the wall, say to paint, then you lose the clip. Recently I mounted my TV using snaptoggles from Home Depot...

More expensive, but much easier to use and are rated for more weight than butterfly toggles of the same bolt thickness. I mounted an 80lb TV recently - I only had one wood stud centered behind the TV so I used snaptoggles on either side. The TV pulls out about 15" from the wall and it's not a problem.

To the OP, in my opinion mounting a shelf and putting a TV on it will probably look odd. The shelf might be a good idea for a soundbar underneath a wall-mounted TV, though.
