He would have got this money in free agency and this is the cost of doing business in the NHL as the Rangers paid a big price to keep Lundqvist this season as well. The long term deals are scary but it's the direction the league is going and in about 5 more years where some of these deals don't look as good maybe the GM's across the league will be more weary but right now long term deals are the trend.
