First of all, the fact that he doesn't play mad is probably a good thing for a man of his size and particular skills. If he played mad he would be suspended for 20-30 games every season. The fact that he plays under control and doesn't take stupid penalties is actually a very important quality in an enforcer, otherwise you're John Scott or worse.
Secondly, if you think McGrattan doesn't inspire fear in anyone who isn't an enforcer, you need to go talk to Andrew Alberts. I bet he feels differently.
