The thing is that in a couple weeks when Butler, Cammalleri, Stempniak and Stajan are gone and you have say Reinhart Baertschi and Granlund coming up to replace them, it will help to have some protection to reduce the chance of injury to the kids. Additionally when Gaudreau gets his likely call up at the end of the year, having multiple deterrents will help.
I don't like goons on a playoff type team, but they are extremely helpful in protecting young NHLers who have little to no experience. It gives them breathing room to adapt, instead of getting targeted.
