I am not so sure why you find it hard to believe that a benching could have no affect on a kid taking a shoot out attempt. It is a shoot out attempt in a preliminary game. I imagine he has taken 10,000 breakaway shots in practice, games, on the outdoor rink with friends etc. It is an easy thing for a kid like him to do.
