Not sure what everyone is seeing in Draisaitl. Have always thought he was a tad overrated and still do. Has the build and size of Kopitar and offensive skill but he hasn't had a good game against decent competition at all. He's the last guy back on the back check and just seems to be disinterested at times when the play isn't going to result with the puck on his stick. That said those are fixable qualities and he'll still be a good NHLer.
Obviously this game is a very small sample size. Will be interested to see how he progresses as the tournament goes on.
For Canada, Drouin is trying to do too much individually. Needs to just play a team game. Mantha is a good finisher. Sam Reinhart is a very intelligent player. McDavid is an elite talent but not on the level of Crosby, lacks Sid's tenacity and refusal to give up on plays.
Dumba has been the best player on the ice so far.
This is a great first matchup for Canada. The Germans skate well and have forced Canada to bring their legs and quick decision making right away in the tournament. You can tell Canada still lacks chemistry, lots of blind passes to the slot and players not sure where their linemates are going to be on the cycle. But they are working hard, closing on the puck quickly and playing the way they need to given that this isn't a group that can win the gold on talent. Very similar to the 2006 team actually. Nice to see the PP cash in a couple times as they will need it to score some timely goals in this tournament against the good teams.
Still work to do especially in the defensive zone as well - some botched assignments have left Germans wide open in the slot and better teams will taken advantage of that. Faceoffs as well.
Hopefully see a few more goals in the 3rd to keep confidence high. This group needs it.
