How can a guy that kidnaps and kills a girl not get the maximum??
Well, the prosecution was never asking for the maximum, so it's hard to imagine the judge assigning the maximum. I was surprised that the charge was dropped to murder in the second; the fact that it was in aid of a kidnapping, even if unintentional, fits with first degree. Makes me think that either they felt their evidence wasn't strong enough and they needed the guilty plea, or the victim's family didn't want to see this man's life ruined. I don't think that even in Canada, the prosecution would have dropped the charge down simply out of the goodness of their hearts, unless it was something the family wanted. Anyway, either he'll make his first parole and get shipped back to China, or he'll decide he fears deportation to China enough that he'll intentionally avoid getting paroled.
