I haven't been paying really close attention to it but there has been a lot of praise for the alpha. I know Chris Roberts is playing it right now, he mentioned it during one of the Livestreams.
From what I have seen it looks pretty good.
It should be noted that Elite: Dangerous is also planned to release in March 2014. They are much closer to finished than SC is. Elite: Dangerous is not really quite on the same scale as Star Citizen but I really hope it is successful. I love space sims and hopefully it would be a good game to play in preparation for SC.
I would expect SC's actual release date to be quite a bit down the road (sometime in 2015). A lot of media have been saying that the game is "scheduled for release" in late 2014 but that has never been the plan. That is originally when the beta test was expected to start for Star Citizen (the persistent universe).
