What's not a wash is the fact that if Sarich shows he's still capable of being a depth defenseman, he is exactly the type of defenseman to trade at the deadline for a 5th to 3rd round pick. O'Brien is close to untradeable given that he averages just over 10 minutes a game, doesn't have the reputation of having the greatest attitude, and has another year at $2M.

And what's your point? You think the Flames would be able to dump Jones' contract? Couldn't you say the same thing about Tanguay's contract which is averages $500K less than Jones' contract: The team could have kept Tanguay's contract which helps keep the Flames above the cap floor and having one $3.5 million dollar bad contract as your only bad contract is fine for the Flames at the moment.

That's pure speculation on your part. When Hartley was hired there was much made about his connection to Tanguay and Tanguay was very complimentary of Hartley. I've heard nothing that suggest that Tanguay's and Hartley's opinion of each other has changed. Of course if Tanguay wanted a trade because he didn't want to be in a losing environment that's a different story but Tanguay is on record as saying he was sad to leave Calgary. He considered it home.
