First-time GMs usually do not explode out of the gate into instant greatness. Someone linked to a complete run-through of Nieuwendyk's tenure as Stars GM in another thread, and it isn't in its entirety terrible. I think he could have a lot of potential in his second go, and under the watch of a more experienced former manager to walk him through the day-to-day stuff.
