The weight training side of MMA, yes absolutely many NHLers are active in, but the majority of this training can take place outside of the typical MMA gym. Rolling with guys on the ground and actively sparring is probably limited. But what do I know. If they want to be a better hockey fighter, I would think boxing is the way to train, not MMA.

Lucic on the street would be bad news because anyone dumb enough to pick that fight probably has other people dumb enough to do stupid things. A sucker punch or weapon could easily end Lucic's career. Or he could be facing someone that can complete a takedown, now Lucic is getting his shoulder torn up.
To add to that there is a very high rate of training injuries in boxing/MMA. It's something that all amateur/professional fighters are aware of, and just accept as part of the business. I would think that would be a heavy deterrent for guys whose living depends on their ability to remain healthy and productive. If a fighter suffers a training injury it's not as big a deal because you're not fighting every other night. You might have to drop out of one fight and schedule one at a later date. Hockey players don't really have that option. Even during the off-season an injury can really set back their training.
