I've been gone for too long to really think much about Christmas anymore, but the things that I miss the most about being with family in Canada for Christmas are decorating the tree with my brother and family dinner together on Christmas evening. Those are what mean the most to me.
For new years day it was always dinner at my grandparents' with steak pie and haggis. Nothing religious at all in our celebrations. Just about being with family.
Here in China, Spring Festival is the big holiday. There are some traditions around it that I love: the ridiculous amounts of fireworks that go on for days, sending lanterns into the sky or watching lanterns in the sky, making dumplings, the day-after-day feasting etc. Still though, it's the warmth of family time being prioritized over everything else that makes it the holidays.
