A co-worker of mine and her husband just got back last week and they loved it. They were staying with Mexican friends though, and her husband is Hispanic so that helped. Her husband told me that if you don't speak Spanish, there are many people that will try to take advantage of you. They loved it though... they said the food was better than anything they had.
Sorry, I don't have any advice other than just educating yourself on the dangers of large Latin America cities. I think if you're smart, there is no reason why you can't go and enjoy yourself.
