Winning teams attract free agents. Unless there is a particular coach or GM in place with whom a player has a feud, he will go to a city based on chances to win, money and then how desirable that particular city is itself.
Darryl Sutter traded away Ference after they had a 'handshake' agreement in place for him not to be traded - still signed FAs afterwards without a problem. Feaster forced Regehr to waive his NTC after leaking the trade publicly, putting Regehr into a situation where it was difficult to say no. Still signed FAs after.
Most guys want to win, get paid and live in a place they enjoy. Everything else is secondary. Unless they have had a particular problem with someone from a team, that is what they follow.
