Seeing as this thread is already derailed - I've often wondered what a good tolerance to hanging out in the fast lane is. On one extreme there is the struggler that just doesn't get it and on the other extreme there is the guy that is constantly in and out of both lanes.

If I'm in the passing lane and a car coming up behind me is going faster I'll obviously get out of the way if I can. However, if I'm in the passing lane and there is a large gap a few cars ahead I often try to pass all 3 or 4 cars before changing lanes. I'm not going to slow down and change lanes just to speed back up again so that I can save the guy behind me a few seconds.

The left lane is the passing lane so as long as I'm actively passing cars I feel quite content in staying in that lane. I would never hang out in the fast lane at 110km/hr as a means of policing traffic but if I'm passing cars going 95km/hr and I'm going 110km/hr I'm going to wait until a safe gap on the right side to let the guy going 125km/hr through.
