If the answer was no, and you held onto him for another year, we'd likely be slightly higher in the standings this year than now. So what would you have after this year? Maybe two first round draft picks this year with likely a slightly worse one for their own pick. Instead we got three firsts in a much, much deeper draft last year and lively a better one this year.

That's fine but then you have to get more in the deal. Trade him earlier in the season.
Plus you don't know if he'll go for FA. Keep him, sign him to a 3-4 extension this summer and see if he takes it.
The return was simply too low compared to what other teams were getting for much worse players.
