Sure the NFL is once a week but even Saturday night hockey pools don't do that well.
NFL has always been a huge gambling sport, though. When I walk into NFL related conversation or talk to "hardcore" NFL fans, I find that most of the "hardcore-ness" of NFL fans is based around the gambling aspect.

I could be wrong, but I just find that most guys that are big into NFL, aren't big into NFL and then because of this they end up gambling on it also. I find that most of those guys are big into the NFL because of the gambling.

I mean how do most NFL conversations go? "Oh man, so and so went down, and I picked that team to win". "Yeah, my picks are still looking good because of this and that" "Man, I hope team X wins, I have this much riding on them".

Then on Sunday, they get together and talk about nothing except how every play/game affects their picks, and they are really cheering for their picks.

Where as with the NHL, I find most fans are fans because they love to just sit down and watch the game of hockey. You get a little bit of the pool talk, but that's more for bragging rights at the end of the season than the "I'm watching this game to cheer for me hopefully winning money" aspect of NFL.
