I'll admit, I've done it with that crappy xmas gift that I didn't want and took it to the place that I would get the best price for it.
Just to add: I think people are missing the part on Wal Mart's return policy that anything over $25 will be issued in-store credit. They are just exchanging products for products, in the end they still get your money in some form or another

There is significant costs to exchanges and refunds beyond the obvious. You have to pay someone to do the refund, audit refunds, handle the cash ins/outs, restock the merchandise, etc. Add to that the very large and real cost of refund fraud and it's very significant.
As a retailer myself, I get very frustrated by the process. It is essential for good customer service, but the cost of it is painful. The entitlement is probably the most ingratiating
