I definitely don't disagree and I understand what you mean. I do think Raonic is a great athlete and a tremendous Canadian. I respect him a great deal for the way he conducts himself. His success at the Davis Cup and getting Canada to the semifinals was one of the country's greatest sporting moments of 2013. At the same time, he didn't win a Major title. His best run was at the US Open, where he nearly made the QFs after that five-setter with Gasquet. For those reasons, I understand why many polls (Sportsnet etc) selected him as Athlete of the Year.
I read your post and it got me thinking, so I asked some of my colleagues who they voted for and why. There are 11 votes in total for the Lou Marsh and I was able to touch base with a few of them. 3/4 that I asked picked Cornish for his utter domination and said he was tremendous game in and game out. They also kept in mind all of the weekly/monthly awards he received this year, as well as the MOP and MOC honors.
Sorry for derailing the thread folks.
