My take on this. I'm going to try and remain focused on the rebuild and not try and make some crazy trades where we completely rob the other team blind. I'll try and recoup players that fit in the long term and focus on players that have the certain qualities you want your players to emulate.
Trade one - Mike Cammalleri to Ottawa - Codi Ceci (RD) 6'2, 203
Ottawa gets that top six forward they desperately need to stay in the playoff race. Calgary gets back a solid young defender who is close to stepping in and could be a top four guy for the Flames down the road.
Trade two - Lee Stempniak and Dennis Wideman to Montreal for Brian Gionta and Mike McCarron (RW) 6'5, 229 and a 3rd round pick
Montreal is in a position to have a go at a playoff run. They could use Stempniak's size, grit and tenacity up front, and Wideman's all around skill on the backend. Montreal is also facing a world of hurt next season on the blueline. They could use a veteran presence like Wideman to eat up some minutes and guide some of their youngsters about to make the jump. The Flames eat Gionta's salary and get a great young prospect in McCarron and in a position they desperately need (RW).
Trade three - Kris Russell and TJ Galiardi to Dallas for Brett Ritchie (RW) 6'3, 209
Dallas fortifies their blueline and gets a very effective role player for a push to the playoffs. Calgary gets another big prospect on the right side.
Trade four - Matt Stajan and Chris Butler to Toronto for Jake Gardiner (D) 6'2, 184 and JM Liles (D) 5'10, 185
Toronto gets a center they need to stay in the playoff mix. We also include a defenseman for depth, one that will hopefully help expose the Leafs for the frauds they are! Calgary gets a good defenseman for the future and helps Toronto out with their cap.
Spring sees the team sign Arnold, Agostini, Gaudreau and Gillies.
Come the off season I go out of my way to sign Dave Bolland and Steve Ott to replace the leadership we let walk. I'd be willing to overpay for both just to get their experience and attitude in the dressing room. Say all you want about these guys, but they both hate to lose and make sure their team mates embrace that themselves. I'd also go after Devin Setoguchi for the RW, and then Matt Niskanen and Matt Greene for the blueline. All of these players are obviously bridge players, but they bring the right attitudes that I think will be the right example for the players coming up.
I won't bother with a lineup, as there are so many young players coming in that it is possible for a great deal of upheaval. Instead I'll just throw out a possible depth chart.
LW: Glencross, Baertschi, Gaudreau, MacDermid, Agostino, Ferland, Klimchuk
Center: Bolland, Ott, Monahan, Colborne, Backlund, Knight, Reinhart, Granlund, Arnold
RW: Hudler, Setoguchi, Jones, McGrattan, McCarron, Ritchie, Poirier, Hanowski, Harrison
D: Giordano, Brodie, Smid, Niskanen, Gardiner, Greene, Liles, Breen, Ceci, Ramage, Wotherspoon, Sieloff
G: Berra, Ramo, Oliver, Gillies
The idea is to continue to move the veterans as the kids step forward and prove they are ready for greater responsibility. Glencross, Hudler, Jones, Smid, Bolland, Ott, Setoguchi, Niskanen, Greene and Liles all get dealt at some point to keep the picks and prospects coming in and the system fully stocked.
One last trade that I mulled over was one that would be certain to raise some eyebrows and be controversial. I considered trading Backlund, Baertschi and our 2014 1st round pick to Florida for 6'6, 221 RW Jimmy Hayes and 6'4 200 RD Alex Petrovic and Florida's 2015 1st rounder. That would give Florida two lottery picks in 2014 and a chance to retool quickly. This would give the Flames two lottery picks in 2015, and a serious shot at McDavid. I decided there was too much risk in it for the Flames, but it is a bold move that recoups a couple of players who fill holes in the system, and are ready to step in right now, while working from a position of strength. The thought of two shots at McDavid is something to consider, but again, too much risk.
Flame away.
