Not much of a difference to some losing in regular season or losing in the play-offs but for me I would prefer the shot at least in the play-offs rather than just being out because there is nothing like that set up.

Under either scenario (what actually happened or my fictions scenario) Bama still had their shot, and still is out because their loss came in November/December while Auburn/the 11-1 team lost early. Calling it a playoff game really means nothing at the end of the day.
The playoffs would provide a "redemption" game for bama, but in my mind that just takes away from the regular season.
I think a playoff could work, but you'd probably have to set up 4 super-conferences with 2 eight team divisions in each, everyone plays the other 7 teams in their division, then the top 2 teams from each division play in a conference playoff, followed by the national championship playoff with the 4 conference winners.
