Brodie quickly passed Butler on the depth chart last season. Long term, Chris Butler cannot be here. Short term, he's taking up a roster spot for, like you said, a d-man who would probably make those same mistakes. The catch is, said young player might also quickly become better.
I don't think it's unfair to say Butler won't get any better than he is. He was just as bad if not worse under the "better coaching" of Brent Sutter.
