Canada's self defense laws are very backwards, they've got an "equal to" policy which allows you only to use the same force which the attacker is using.

So if you're getting beaten with a bat, you're allowed to use one too. But if you're getting punched, you can be charged if you defend yourself with a weapon such as a knife.

Even holding a criminal at bay with a firearm can get your charged (even without discharging your firearm).

"no more than is necessary to enable him to defend himself" this line in the criminal code is also a very fine line to walk. How much is too much? If you are being killed and you feel your life is threatened, how much force are you going to use.
