I'm on the fence about this. I personally think Stajan being re-signed has more to do with how Colborne and Monahan progress from now until the trade deadline. If the 2 youngsters show they are ready for top 6 minutes every night and don't need to be sheltered then you have to trade Stajan as he is only in the way. If they aren't ready for that than Stajan is a nice stop gap until they are ready.
What I am worried about is the Flames falling into what I refer to as "the trap". The Flames have done it before, where they hold onto players for too long thinking they have the right mix of players to get the job done. Guys like Tim Jackman and Brendan Morrison were kept when their values were probably the highest in hopes of winning, only to see their play fall off, the team miss their goals, and have to shuffle them off for the peanuts they were really worth all along.
Stajan should not be in the long term plans of this franchise and should be shuffled off soon as soon as their young centers start taking the reigns.

Morrison never had a high value as a Flame... They picked him up for nothing after Vancouver gave him a chance by having him in their camp as a non-contract player and he was definitely in the last gasps of his career as a 36 year old.
Jackman was never worth much more than a 6th round pick... The Flames signed him as a UFA for 2 years at the league min of 550k.
