It is part of building a winning culture:

Guys that are currently on the Flames that for most of their NHL careers fully expected to be in the playoffs:

Hudler (5 playoffs out of 7 seasons), Cammalleri (3 out of 9) , Wideman ( 4 out of 8), TJ Galiardi (3 out of 5) and have played well in the playoffs

Veterans who fully plan to be golfing at the end of the regular season: Stempniak (2 out of 8 with really really bad playoff contributions)), Smid (0 for 7) , Stajan ( 1 for 10), Gio (1 out of 7, his team made it 2 of 7 but he was hurt) , Glencross (1 for 7), David Jones (1 out of 6)

I don't want Monahan and Baertschi and Brodie and Gaudreau to be mentored by guys who have not been contributors to successful teams themselves. I don't want them to learn how to cope with losing.

Most of these guys have to be cut loose and replaced with some veterans who have won and understand what it takes to win.

The 2004 Flames were underdogs but had Yelle, Gelinas, Ferrence, Simon, Conroy, Niemienien, Lowry and Warriener who each individually had as many playoff games as the list of the 2013-14 early golfer Flames veterans combined.

What an incredibly bad decision picking Bouwmeester over Phanuef.... Phanuef is 5 of 8 making the playoffs.... playing a key role in all those playoff teams.

It speaks volumes that the player with the most team success on the Flames -- Hudler (an ESL guy) is the guy that steps up and gets Monahan to live with him.
