I can't say whether it would or wouldn't have put Boston over the top, but, Iginla was always a better fit in Boston than Pittsburgh. Probably one of the reason's Boston signed him this offseason while Pittsburgh didn't extend an offer. Boston's offer was also significantly better than Pittsburgh's.
It's the--critical--fault of flames management that they didn't get him to sign his trade waiver with his two possible destination teams, the protocol when orchestrating a trade involving a no-trade clause. This is a business with a heavy reliance on contracts, and signing the waiver is simply protocol.
That they didn't do it is just another indictment of the ineptitude of the management structure in Calgary.

So please tell me why Iginla would sign this waiver and why his agent would advise him to sign a waiver he doesn't have to. Please keep in mind it was the Flames who asked him to move, and not Iginla's idea.
So why would he give up the rights he bargained for when it didn't give him a choice. You know... part of the reason why players get a NTC.
