I can sympathize with these fellas -- I know they have (literally) a brutal job -- but it is what they signed up for. He was a fighter. That's the only reason he was in the NHL. It's like saying "The coach told me to do my job and that I wouldn't have my job if I didn't do my job, so he was a bully...".
Yeah the fact he's standing by some principle at the cost of financial reward in this issue to me suggests he doesn't have much of agenda in calling out someone who acted badly towards him previously. It also does lend some credibility to his character. Calling out Hartley would help him directly if he were part of the lawsuit, so in that case there would be an obvious COI in his statements.

And… it's NOT like "the coach told me to do my job." The coach is being a prick and a bully, largely by just how he's acting. It's funny in that lunch conversation with that football player today, he sort of said a lot of the same things Parker did. Yeah, this is the culture of playing hurt when you're a fringe player, etc, but some coaches are just nastier about it. As I mentioned, he had one coach that he had singled out as being particularly heartless. Hartley seems to fit that bill.

We also discussed the Incognito comparison. He didn't agree with Incognito, but thought that entire situation was blown out of proportion. He didn't care much about the use of some racist terms as he agreed guys (including white guys) toss that word around a lot in a locker room without bad intention (my friend is black FWIW), and thought the "death threats" on Martin were sort of laughable. I mean, Incognito wasn't really going to kill Martin, let along rip off his head and poop down his throat. Athletes talk crazy some times.
