I'm actually not a fan of developing goalies through a trial by fire. Confidence is pretty important for goalies and if a goalie isn't ready to be a starter in the NHL it doesn't seem giving him lots of starts is a good way to develop him. I mean how many goalies actually benefitted from a trial by fire as opposed to backing up and learning from an established veteran and taking away the #1 job with their play? It just seems to me that goalies who earned the #1 job tend to be much more consistent from year to year than goalies who developed through a trial by fire.
