Selfishly as a big fan of the WJHC and a Canada fan I definitely want him to go.
I think that how much it helps/hurts is being overstated here I think it likely doesn't change much either way in terms of his development.
The Flames are already out of the play-off race so that takes that concern out of it so I think it comes down to what they think is best for Monahan and what he wants to do if he has a strong feeling either way.
If he seems like he is hitting a wall a bit like young kids do then I think it is a good chance for him to get a bit of a break from the NHL grind and go have a blast playing with his peers and for his country. If he is playing well then I can see why the Flames would want to keep him here to continue his development.
I don't think there is a right or wrong answer and either way he is likely to develop into a very good, if not great, NHL player.
