The debate is over development. If the Flames feel sending Monahan to the WJC is good for is development, then he should go. If they don't feel it is, then he shouldn't go. I trust their judgement either way. Sending Gio to the Spengler Cup does nothing for his development, because he's already developed, so totally different circumstances.
For purely selfish reasons, I'd want him to go as I want to cheer him on a team that actually has a chance to win something.
