They still get to promote their programming to the HNiC audience. CBC gets no revenue, but they also have no expenses related to HNiC.
In order to remain at the table with HNiC in its current form, CBC would have likely needed to at least double what they're paying the NHL for rights, and at that point, it's likely no longer a profit generator for the network.
Also, depending on how Rogers will use the CBC's staff (both on camera and off), this may allow them to save some jobs and keep CBC Sports alive for other programming. Losing HNiC outright, would likely have meant the total shutdown of CBC Sports.
