I don't think LCD TVs are even made regularly any more. Your only options are really LED or plasma and even then it depends on budget. I purchased a TV during the summer and went back and forth between the two.
When it comes to plasma the best players in the game are Panasonic and Samsung. My concern with plasma, and why I didn't go with that type of TV, was burn in and break in time. According to some owners (taken from actual owners from AVS Forum) plasma TVs need about 100 hours to be broken in to get the best possible picture. Once its broken in, however, the picture is going to look simply amazing.
The other issue was burn in. Some people that played games got burn in others did not. If you do get burn in you can run some colour shifting images on the TV to minimize or get rid of it. Again, based on what I read you could end up running these images on the TV for hours.
LED doesn't have any of those issues but they have their own quirks. Buying an LED is like playing the lottery when it comes to panels. Some will have no spotlighting (white/bright spots on dark images) and no stuck/dead pixels and others will have a ton of them. When I was purchasing TVs I bought 1 Sony, 2 Samsung and 2 Sharp TVs before I was happy. And even then I settled for my choice as it was not perfect. LED TVs will also not give you the blackest blacks compared to plasma unless you buy Sharps Elite TVs which come in at about $6000.
I'm definitely no expert on the matter so you may want others to weigh in.
