Summer 2006 I got home a bit late to my apartment in Sunnyside after some late night Stampeding with a new friend and I walk to my door and there was someone at the door trying to pick the lock. My unit was in the middle of the building so I walked past him to see what was up and then stopped at the neighbours door and said out loud, "fk this isnt my apartment". The guy looks at me and bolts and in the process drops his man purse that had his wallet, a book of drawings, and some sort of lockpick set. No ID in his wallet but did have a few giftcards and about $130 in cash.

When I first saw him I thought about trying to do something but what if he has a weapon. Honestly I just wanted to get inside with my new friend and didnt really want to mess up all my hard work.

The next morning we went out for breakfast and I used the guys cash to pay for breakfast as I said goodbye to my new friend. I took the cash and gift cards out and figured I would call the cops on Monday.

In the afternoon the cops knocked on everyones doors. The cop asked me if I heard or saw anything suspicious last night. This is probably the 50th person I am guess he had asked so he was expecting the same answer. I told him what happened and gave him the wallet and the lockpick set. The only thing the wallet had in it was some buisness cards. I guess he wasnt the greatest thief because he had tried to pick the lock of a few different apartments with no success other than screwing up a bunch of peoples doors so they couldnt get in.

It was such a surreal day, evening, and night leading to that enounter and just such a weird encounter. To not bolt immediately when he saw me takes guts that I wouldnt notice what he was trying to do. Soon after I moved from that place and now its converted into a condo building. I always had a bad feeling as alot of people would prop the door open to that building for whatever reason.

To this day I still proudly display that book of drawings just in case a friend of a friend knows this person and is ever invited over to my house. Its also a trophy of sort as some of the drawings are pretty damn good.
