But budget is also an issue for us...so in looking at everything, I am thinking about buying a Nexus 5 outright from google, and then taking it to Wind and going on either their $40/month or $50/month plan.

The only hesitation I have in doing this is the camera: in general, the reviews of it are, well meh. For e.g. http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/go...-tag-1.2426454 and http://reviews.cnet.com/google-nexus-5/ and http://www.techspot.com/review/744-g...s-5/page4.html and http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/4/50...nexus-5-review

Soooo....is the camera that bad? I have 2 little kids so we need pictures and video. I've looked at stuff like an iphone 4 or whatever that you can get for $0 on a contract, but I would be stuck on a 2/year contract and its too expensive over the length.

Given the above, is the nexus 5 good to buy, or is tehre another smartphone for a reasonabl-ish price that would work better? Thanks.
Definitely the camera isn't the greatest unfortunately in anything other than good lighting (then again so is almost everything). If taking photos is a huge thing for you, I'd honestly take a look and see if something like the Lumia 900/920/1020 aren't viable options to pick up used. Great cameras for photo and video and because of the relative lack of popularity I'd imagine you could find something for cheap.

Just as easy as any other screen. To be honest, I feel like it's more about luck/how anal(careful) you are about taking care of it. Personally I like the peace of mind of having that layer, especially for any resale purposes.
It's not just the ease of charging and picking up the phone after charging, it's also saving your charging port from any wear and tear or potential accidents.
