One of the things we did to childproof our house was change to doorknobs on the closet where we kept cleaning supplies and the basement stairs. Our outer doors are all doorknobs already.

Levers are the best thing to happen to door technology. I installed them on my exterior doors. Much less of a pain when you're trying to carry something in, eg) giant bag of rice, sleeping child, bags of groceries, etc.
If your deadbolt is at a reasonable height, your kids and pets should be safe. If they can reach it, then they are probably of the age to operate a door knob. As of this moment, I don't think many pets can unlatch a deadbolt.
