If he is playing at an competitive NHL level why let him go a step down? I am not sure I see any worth in playing with players who are not at his level.

I don't see how playing against teens instead of men would increase the risk of injury.
The only valid argument for not sending him to the WJC is to keep him in the Calder Trophy hunt. That one reason alone may be enough for him to stay up in the NHL.
