It's not exactly the same, but teams have 2 years to sign their CHL players before they go back into the draft.
What difference does it make to a team whether they lose a player this way or as a UFA? If I'm not mistaken, Erixon would have gone back into the draft as well and the Flames would have been compensated with the 53rd pick in the draft.
