It's a difference in size I think - Kiprusoff started off very passive in the shootout when it was introduced and got burned for it. He eventually added a poke check to his repertoire, but still relied on forwards getting close to him before he could get it. Forwards still had the option of burning the puck straight past as Kiprusoff's talents were in his mobility and vision, not one-on-one reflexes.
Berra by comparison can be much more aggressive with it; even if he screws it up, he is large enough that the forward will still have problems getting around him and lifting the puck over his pads (evidenced once during that shootout).
