I would also disagree with this. Reviews are generally just the opinion of 1 single individual. The 10 handed out to Uncharted 3 is often described by other IGN staff as a very unpopular opinion, but it was a score that was argued and ultimately defended well enough that it passed. I personally see absolutely nothing wrong with that. I know some are of the opinion that game ratings should be robotic (game x got a 7.3, so the precedent for 7.3 scores has been set), but I don't agree.
IGN also destroys games that advertise with them all the time. I remember when SOCOM came out for PS3 they had developer interviews on Podcast Beyond, and they talked about it all the time. One of the original guys who ran the podcast even went to work with Zipper, and it got SLAUGHTERED by IGN.
In the end this odd game ratings conspiracy doesn't make sense to me. Keeping something of that magnitude under wraps would be an incredible task in an industry such as that.
