Now, clearly, never playing in the AHL is a strong indicator of being a top-level NHL'er, but it's a stretch to say that it's only the generational guys who have careers like that.

Sure, guys that are too good for the AHL from day one are likely to be good NHLers. This says nothing, however, about the the potential of those that do start in the AHL.
